The Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 5 - 7
Chapter 5
Blessed are the gentle and humble, for they will inherit the earth.
What does this mean?
Don't worry about evildoers or be envious of those who do wrong, for they will soon wither like grass and fade away
like green plants. Trust in the Lord and do good; live in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord,
and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will do this: He
will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord
and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. For those who do evil will be destroyed,
but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you
look for them, they will not be found. But the gentle and humble will inherit the land and enjoy peace and
prosperity.
~ Psalm 37:1-11
Context and Interpretation
- Context in the Sermon on the Mount:
- The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is a collection of Jesus’ teachings on righteous living. The
Beatitudes, which open the sermon, describe the characteristics and attitudes that are blessed by God
and valued in the Kingdom of Heaven.
- Immediate Context:
- This Beatitude follows the first two, which speak about being "poor in spirit" and "mourning." Together,
these qualities reflect an attitude of humility, dependence on God, and a recognition of human frailty
and the need for God's grace.
Explanation of the Passage
- "Blessed are the gentle and humble":
- The term "gentle and humble" (often translated as "meek" in other versions) refers to those who exhibit
a spirit of gentleness, humility, and self-control. Meekness is not weakness; rather, it is strength
under control, characterized by a submissive and trusting attitude towards God.
- Biblically, gentleness and humility are highly valued traits. They involve a willingness to submit to
God’s will and a gentle approach to others, avoiding arrogance and harshness.
- "For they will inherit the earth":
- The promise that the gentle and humble will "inherit the earth" echoes Psalm 37:11, which says, "But the
meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity."
- This inheritance can be understood in both a present and future sense:
- Present: The gentle and humble often experience a deeper sense of peace and contentment in this
life, as they trust in God's provision and avoid the strife that comes with pride and
aggression.
- Future: Ultimately, this inheritance points to the eschatological hope of the new heaven and new
earth (Revelation 21:1), where God’s people will dwell with Him in eternal peace and
righteousness.
Biblical Principles
- Humility and Gentleness:
- These qualities are essential for living in alignment with God's will. Humility involves recognizing
one’s dependence on God, while gentleness is about showing kindness and restraint in dealing with
others.
- Examples of humility and gentleness can be seen in the lives of biblical figures like Moses (Numbers
12:3) and Jesus (Matthew 11:29).
- Divine Inheritance:
- The promise of inheriting the earth reflects the biblical theme of God's people receiving His blessings
and a secure place in His eternal kingdom. This inheritance is a gift from God, rooted in His promises
and fulfilled through Christ.
- Counter-Cultural Values:
- Jesus’ teaching contrasts with worldly values that often prize assertiveness, power, and dominance. The
Kingdom of Heaven values gentleness and humility, highlighting the upside-down nature of God's kingdom.
Application
- Cultivating Gentleness and Humility: Believers are encouraged to develop these qualities in their own lives.
This involves a conscious effort to rely on God, treat others with kindness and respect, and avoid pride and
harshness.
- Trusting in God’s Promises: The promise of inheriting the earth provides hope and encouragement. Believers can
trust that living according to God’s values, even when it seems counter-cultural, will ultimately lead to His
blessings.
- Living Peacefully: This Beatitude calls for a lifestyle that promotes peace and avoids conflict. Gentleness and
humility can lead to more harmonious relationships and a more peaceful existence.
Challenges and Encouragement
- Countering Pride and Aggression: In a world that often values assertiveness and self-promotion, maintaining a
spirit of gentleness and humility can be challenging. It requires a deliberate choice to follow Jesus’ example
and teachings.
- Hope in Future Inheritance: While the full inheritance of the earth may not be realized in this life, believers
are encouraged by the hope of eternal life and the coming of God’s kingdom in its fullness.
In summary, Matthew 5:5, "Blessed are the gentle and humble, for they will inherit the earth," emphasizes the value
of gentleness and humility in the Kingdom of Heaven. It promises that those who exhibit these qualities will receive
God’s blessing and ultimately inherit the earth. This Beatitude challenges believers to adopt a counter-cultural
attitude of meekness, trust in God's promises, and live in a way that promotes peace and harmony.
